Dakota could also sence the approcing cold. He began to ask him self agian if leaving Kai's warm den so far behind was such a good idea.
Dakota laughed and began to sent the ground beneath his feet. When Kai mentioned the badger he looked up and blinked. Mentaly he thought about what a badger looked like. Huge killer paws armed with long sharp claws. But surely 2 vargs could put up a good fight. I mean the badger couldn't attack from both sides at once could it? And after a quick survey of the land Dakota relized they would be lucky to find much els. "Sure, lets go for it!", he finally said. Trotting further up the trail, Dakota looked back at Kai and wait to see what would happen.

Kai noded and followed Dakota, continuing to sniff the ground here and there. All of a sudden, the trail ended. Kai looked at a large snowbank and motioned for Dakota to come over. "I think it's in there..." he whispered in wonder. He was pondering what to do, but decided the best thing to do would be to take action. He had never fought a badger, but with those claws...he was sure it could put up a good fight. "I'll dig into it's den...and it'll probably come out scratching, so be ready to back me up" he whispered to Dakota.
He took a deep breath and readied himself for the onslaught. He lifted a paw and began digging at the badger's front door, only to find the little lera backing away slowly and uttering a low growl/hissing sound. Kai backed his face up a little to avoid getting slashed in the face by a huge claw, his ears were pinned back as he started to growl, his white teeth shone in the moonlight as he reached a paw behind the badger and managed to roll it out of its den.

Dakota layed his dark ears back agenst his head and his thick hackles rose as the badger proceded to spit an snarl. Taking a step forward Dakota looked to Kai to see what he was going to do. Truning his head back he pulled his lips up into a evil grin and emitted a deep snarl at the bager. Then taking quick strides he proceded to get one side of the badger. "Get on the other side!", he called to Kai. "We have to corner it!". Swiping his large black paw out he took a swipe at the badger's exposed body. Small stripes of red apeared where his claws had conected with the lera. But the thick hide proved to be more resistant than he had originaly thought.
"Should we try rolling it over?", he asked Kai hurredly. "Maybe its belly will present a softer target!" Dakota then stuck his wide snout under the bager's belly and flipped the surprised animal right off its feet.

He snarled angrily at the badger, his stomache was growling almost as loud, telling him they needed to kill this animal soon and eat before the night froze over again. He stepped to the other side of the badger, blocking it from escaping to the safety of its den. He pounced at it and managed to pin one of its paws to the ground, but ended up getting swiped in the face by the other. At first all he felt was a sting, and he whimpered, but then his anger took over any pain he felt and he snapped at the badger. "Kill it!" he shouted at Dakota as he continued to hold the badger in place.

Dakota looked over at his friend's small whimper. Seeing his scratched face Dakota looked back at the badger and snarled viciously. Then opening his mouth wide he bit deep down into the badger's exposed neck. As his teeth sank in he felt the animal's warm blood spill into his mouth and down his neck. With one quick snap the life and spirit of the badger was gone.
Releasing the dead lera he looked up at Kai. "Are you alright?", he asked looking at his face. Suddenly Dakota remebered that they still didn't have a shelter. And it was getting colder by the minute. Looking back at Kai he asked "Should we eat here, or carry it to a shelter?" Dakota also had another feeling at this time. He could feel the Blood Lust in him. He knew this is brought out when a varg kills but he had never experianced it himself. He wondered if Kai could feel it too.

Kai all of a sudden felt very angry and wild. The smell of blood was driving him crazy. "I'm fine" he snarled, not meaning to sound mean, although it came out that way. "Let's eat here, I don't want anyone tracking our kill and following us home." With that he dug into the badger ravenously as if to get revenge for injuring him. He swallowed a large chunck of red meat and his golden eyes glinted madly in the night. He felt as if every wrong-doing in his life should be taken out on this little striped lera, such was the nature of bloodlust. When he had eaten his fill he backed off and licked his lips with his now red tongue. His hot breath made fog in the cold night air and still smelled of blood. "We really need to find shelter soon."

Dakota's green eyes flashed as he turned his head in Kai's direction. His mouth turned up into a snarl and he begun to bare his teeth before he tore into his part of the badger. This was such a vicious kill he though as he ate. But that is the way of the Putnar and he had been prepairing himself for this ever since he began hunting grasshoppers in the field.
Finishing of the meat, he steped back and stared at Kai. "Yes, we do need shelter", he finally replyed. "I'll look over here, he said turning his muzzle twards a small thicket of trees and brush. With that Dakota loped of into the direction of the trees, leaving large paw prints in the snow behind him.

Kai looked for a moment at the dead badger carcass. They would leave the remains for the flying scavengers. He was quite proud of his first 'real' hunt, and wondered if Dakota was too. They had made a great team.
He nodded to Dakota and headed off in the opposite direction. What did they hope to find? He doubted they would have the luck of stumbling upon another abandoned cave. Maybe they shouldn't have left the one Kai had found... Once again, he was beginning to doubt their adventure. he shook his head, they had already come this far. He continued sniffing arounf, only to find nothing. The wind was starting to pick up, cold air rushed over his body as he shivered. He looked over to Dakota and howled, "Have you found anything yet?"

As Dakota trotted away he looked over his sholder to see Kai looking at the badger carcass. What a feeling! he thought. His first kill! From the looks of it Kai looked proud of the kill too. Badger's are vicous animals, but working together they had found the prefect way to take one down.
When he reached the thicket of trees Dakota accepted the relalization that there probaly wasn't anything around here. He sniffed around a bit but all he could scent was old trails and markings from long gone lera. The heavy wind suddenly carried over Kai's howl. But Dakota didn't have time to answer. When he whirled around to answer Kai his left front leg steped right into a rusty bear claw trap. From the looks of the trap it had been left long ago by humans that no longer inhabited the area. Letting out a long mornful howl Dakota called to Kai as his eyes started to blurr with the pain.

Kai's ears waited eagerly for the reply that never came...He ooked over to try and see what Dakota was doing when he heard a howl of pain echoing throughout the forest. He ran to Dakota as fast as his long varg legs would carry him. What he got there both confused him, and filled his young heart with a painful sorrow, Dakota was trapped.
He looked on at the scene, not entirely sure what had happened, other than the fact that Dakota's leg was tapped in a metal contraption. "Man..." Kai growled and let out a howl for help, for anyone to come and asist them. He waited, but no reply. He looked at the trap and back at Dakota, his face was filled with pain. Kai didn't know what to do, he had neve seen one of these before and felt completely helpless. He pawed at it pathetically and tried his teeth, but it wouldn't budge. He began to whimper in frustration at not being able to help his friend. "What should I do, Dakota??"

When Dakota saw Kai running across the clearing he felt his heart lift a little. Without someone around to help this trap would be the end of whatever got caught in it.
When Kai reached him and proceded to do his best to help free his leg, he couldn't help but feel even more greatful about meeting this young varg in the first place. In response to Kai's question Dakota smiled weekly. "I don't know", he wispered. "Maybe I can just pull my leg out real fast" With that he quickly trew all of his weight back and pulled up with his leg hard. His leg came out half way. Repeating the process finaly freed him of the trap's metal jaws, but his leg was badly injured and he couldn't stop the long whimpers from coming out of his mouth.
Looking back at Kai he whipered "I think I can walk, but we really must find shelter now. And fast!"

He almost couldn't watch as Dakota mangled his leg, trying so hard to yank it out of the trap. He was surprised when his idea actually work, but feared he wouldn't be able to make it far eough to find a suitable shelter. It was almost pitchblack now, though with his wolf eyes he could still see in the dark. He hoped that they would somehow manage to find a shelter nearby, for Dakota's sake. The wind was growing colder and more harsh by the minute. "Are you sure you can walk? Maybe you should wait here while I go search?" He hated the idea of abandoning his friend in this condition, even for a short while, but he didn't want to make him walk a long way only t find there was no shelter in sight. He left it up to Dakota to decide.

Dakota pulled his injured leg up against his furry chest. "Yes", he breathed in response to Kai's question. "Have you ever seen a dog that has had a leg amputated? I think I can just hop along like that. Maybe even jog a little. But defiantly not fast and no full out runs unless it is life or death ok?"
Deminstrating for Kai he took a few 3 legged hops around in the snow. "Ok", he said. "We had better get a move on, especially consitering the blood from your face, and my leg have now heavaly scented the area."
Looking at Kai, he flashed a handsome simle and said "Lets find us some shelter shall we"

He smiled at his friend half-heartedly. "Alright, no running." He knew they had to find shelter fast, so he set off in a random direction, but made sure to walk slow so Dakota could keep up. He hoped no other putnar would find them...or even worse...Balkar.
It semeed they had been wandering in the cold forever, when Kai lifted his head and sniffed the air. "This way Dakota, I think we've finally found it." Sure enough, a few yards away was a cave. He peered insie cautiously from what he thought was a safe distance, to make sure it was unoccupied. It looked safe enough, so he padded soflty inside and waited for Dakota to follow.

Balkar. Thats what Dakota was thinking about as they walked down the trail in search of shelter. What if they did have an encounter with them? Surely someone would smell all the blood that the 2 vargs had left behind in the snow. Yawning, he continued to walk on along side Kai.
When Kai made the announcment that shelter had been located Dakota couldn't have been happyer. Dakota was dead tired and his leg was really starting to ache. As he entered the cave he was equaly greatful to see some moss and leaves left over from past inhabitants. They would serve to make the cave floor softer and would provide a nice bed to sleep on.
Pushing some of the leaves and moss twards Kai, he said "We might as well get confortable. There is not telling how long we'll be here".
(((Sorry, I know its kinda lame. I had a little writer's block going on)))
