Since he was yet a pup, he didn't have the best sense of direction. Especially now that he was somewhere completely foreign to him. His old pack teritory had been farther south and they had never come up this far. He shook his dark head heavily, "No idea. I've never been this far before, I ventured far from my pack's old territory in fleeing the fire and searching for shelter."
Dakota had said that his pack's old territory had been situated near the stone castle. He wondered if any of his family had witnessed any of the prophecy actually take place. He was happy that Dakota had decided to open up to him and become friends. He had never had any friends outside of his old pack, and now that they were gone, Dakota was his only aquaintance [sp?]. He too wondered about Dakota's past and what he had been able to learn from his family before they were taken from him. "Hey Dakota.." he asked hesitantly, "Did you ever learn to hunt?"

Hmm, he said looking at Kai. "Maybe we could just pick a direction and start walking?" " I have no where els to be so it doesn't really matter to me where we end up".
Dakota was also glad to finaly have a friend. He had been an only child and hadn't ever met anyone outside of the pack. The only memories he really had of that life was was all the stories his family would tell. Of legands and of thier lives as cubs when all was taking place and of Morgra. He wondered if Kai noticed how much he seemed to think of the old legends, but he couldn't help it. They had been such a curse and it was all he really had to remember his family by.
Looking back at Kai he answered "Kinda, I practiced in the feilds, but I never went on a hunt. "Maybe between the two of us we can catch something. Why? Are you hungry?"

He cuckled, "Neither do I, so...Let's go this way, perhaps?" He started up a hill with another bunch of trees starting at the top. "Hey Dakota, I notice you bring up the old eegends a lot, is it because you believe them all?" He wasn't surprised by how often he thought of them, a lot of vargs could speak of nothing else. The old storyteller of his pack often filled his head with images of Tor, Fenris, Sita and the like, though he wasn't sure he believed all of it. Naturally, he was a bit hesitant to believe anything after he lost his pack. Why would Tor and Fenris let them be seperated like that? This was something he had often wondered, though with his wild imagination, he did believe many of the old stories.
"No, I'm not hungry right now, I was just wondering what we would do when we were. I've never been hunting either, well, except for that rabbit I caught back there. That was pure luck anyway- it was limping."

"Looks good", he said starting to follow Kai up the hill. He stoped at Kai's questions. "Mmm, not really. Or at least I don't think I belive them. Back when I was with my family the legands were some of the main talk in the forest. Do you remember hearing them?" " One of the older females in my pack had been a friend of Brassa's. Thats where most of the stories came from. But I mostly talk about it becasue its all I have left." " Tor and Fenris seem to have a dificult life planed anhead for either of us I guess, it makes you wonder how our lives turned out so similar."
"I'm not either. But hey look on the bright side, since you alredy caught a rabbit limping or not, you have more experiance than me. That means you might be able to actually beat me at something", he said with a wink

"Yes, I remember the legends" he said as he continued to walk. The air had become dry and the temperature had dropped signifigantly. Kai's paws made a light crunching noise on the frosted earth and frozen grass. The clouds in the darkening sky shifted, blinding the eye of Tor, though her light still glowed faintly in the sky. Kai's breath made a cloud in front of him as he panted quietly. "The old storyteller in my pack told them to me, though they weren't the defining point of my childhood. Come to think of it... there really was no defining point in my childhood..." he said as he walked on. "Do you ever wonder why Tor and Fenris can be so loving, and then, just take everything away?" The dark clouds overhead split open and snow began to fall. The whole forest seemed to undergo a transformation in minutes and became something of a white dreamland. Everything seemed so serene and peaceful, but at the same time, meloncholly and infinetely sad. It was amazing how the weather had the power to intensify one's emotions. Nonetheless, Kai thought it was beautiful.

"Mmmm" whispered Dakota." I wish there was another part of my childhood that I could remember better. I hate the stories because of what they have done to the Varg. And I do wonder about Tor and Fenris as you do. My parents would talk to them all the time, yet the gods didn't save them from the Balkar. They let them come anyway"
Dakota suddenly felt a wet fluffy flake of snow hit him. Surprised, he twisted his eyes in the direction of his nose in an effort to see the flake that hit him. "Its snow!", he shouted forgeting the legands and gods. "Kai its snow!!! I have never seen snow befor, look how beautiful it is covering everything like a thick blanket." He took a bounding leap into the new snow and instantly dissapeared into a pile of the frost. Popping his head back out he blinked the snow out of his eyes and looked over at Kai. "C'mon!", he called. "Its great!"

He managed a smile despite how the sadness was writhing inside of him again, though when he saw Dakota having fun despite his own sadness, he felt uplifted. The snow was falling heavily now, and covered everything except for the tops of a few choice shrubs. The tall conifers looked as if someone had come and painted them up in white for a special occasion. Kai's dark pelt was now covered with a light layer of snow and was barley visable beneath the white. He shook himself off, only to dive headfirst into another pile. He popped ot of the back and shook himself again, laughing as he did. The snow was so fresh and with it came renewal. He laughed, his tail thumping from side to side, flinging snow everywhere. "You're right, this is great!" Kai lifted his head and howled, remembering how great it had felt before. This time, his howl was filled with joy rather than remorse and loss.

Seeing Kai's new happyness Dakota laughed and opened his mouth for another deep howl. It felt so good to have this much fun. Even if was for just a short while. Taking a breath he howled one more time and looked over at Kai.
Dakota was about to ask if Kai wanted to get something to eat when a new smell entered the air. What is that? He wondered to himself. Was it fire? Man? Another Varg? He didn't want thier fun to end but he knew if it was something bad that they needed to leave.
"Do you smell that?", he asked. "What do you think it is?"

Kai stopped his howling for a moment as he sniffed thr air curiously. He knew the smell was not fire, nor was it man, for those were two smells he had learned to identify first hand. It didn't smell much like Varg either, and he had seen no signs that they had entered the territory of another pack. Kai stood up and shook himself off, and walked around a bit, not seeming to be looking for anything in particular. His ears were raised and his eyes alert. Just then, he heard a deep roar, unlike any varg he had ever heard as a dark shadow emerged from the trees: it was a bear.
Kai looked to Dakota in horror, he had never seen a bear before but he knew it didn't look friendly. They must have stumbled on it's territory without knowing. The bear lumbered forward on its bulky legs and was charging straight for the two varg. Its brown hair bristled on end as it opened its gaping jaws for another roar, revealing what seemed to be hundreds of sharp white teeth. "Dakota, we have to run!" he said as he began to scramble up the hill.

Dakota had watched his friend search the area. At the time he hadn't really been worried. What could possibly ruin this evening he thought. But as the bear emerged from the brush all he could do was stare. He was so terrified and all the terror he had felt as a cub when the Balkar came was rushing back on him. He could feel his whole body starting to shake and the bear was getting closer by the second.
Looking over at Kai he finally started to run. Following his new friend up the hill Dakota could feel the bear's hot breath on his body and the ground seemed to shake with each new stride that the bear took. As another roar boomed behind them Dakota felt his mind fill with new fear. "Kai!", he called. "I don't know if we can outrun this!"

He stopped and looked back and realized that his friend wasn't moving. "Dakota, come on!!" he demanded. The bear was closing in on him and he wondered why his friend wasn't trying to escape. Finally, it seemed his instincts kicked in and he followed Kai up the hill.
Kai looked back at Dakota, his young face full of worry and fear. He knew in his heart they would never be able to outrun this monster, not to mention keep up the stamina to do so. "I know.." he panted as he contiued to run, "but maybe we can outsmart it." He wondered if bears even ate varg and why this particular bear was so hellbent on killing them when they hadn't even been doing anything! As he was running, he spotted a place where the forest floor cut off onto a lower level, it was like a miniature cliff carved into the forest floor. "C'mon, I have an idea!" he said to Dakota as he jumped down the 'stair' and backed up into the hollow niche. He heard the bear's huge paws thumping overhead, and then everything went quiet. Kai could hear the bear sniffing the air for the scent of wolf, but the drop-off had covered their trail. Kai's heart was beating so loudly in his chest he though for sure the bear would hear it. He tried his best to old his breath and not make any noise. After a few more minutes of searching, the bear growled in frustration as it finally backed off and returned, defeated, to it's den.

Dakota sat back and panted in the little cave. I am such a Sikla he thought. After Kai has discovered the cliff Dakota had been so fast to jump in that he knew he looked like a cowering little cub rather than the young varg that he was becoming. Looking over at Kai he panted "You saved us.Thats twice you have kept me from an untimly end."
Sucking in a lungful of air he asked "What was with that bear anyway? Maybe we stumbled apon its den?" Looking around Dakota was even less assured of where they where then back in the clearing. Now what? he wondered. Surely no one wants to hang out with a weak one like him....quickly he shoke his head of his feelings and turned back to Kai "Well that was fun now wasn't it", he asked lightly. "But perhaps we should find something to eat, I'm starving!"

He too felt like a weak Sikla. Well what did you want to do, fight the bear? he asked himself. He decided that running was not always a cowardly thing to do, sometimes it had to be done. He noticed shimmers of what appeared to be doubt in Dakota's eyes. "We were really brave back there!" he said assuringly. "And don't worry about it, I know you would've done the same for me."
"Tell me about it...I thought bears were supposed to be hibernating. We probably woke it up or something with our howling. We probably shouldn't howl unless we really need to from now on." His personality was becoming more mature with each sun and he strived to make decisions that were for the best. He knew how fun he found howling...but real varg realized howling was a tool, not a toy. "Mom always said, let a sleeping bear lie" he laughed. "Well, not really....I'm hungry too. What do you think we could possibly find out here in this weather?"

Dakota smiled back at his friend "Yes, I guess we really were", he said. He looked out at the area around him. The sky was getting darker and Tor was starting to become more visible. It didn't look like there would be anymore rain tonite but it was a little unsettaling to see dark clouds back in the sky.
"Your probaly right", he continued. No more howling he thought, although it seemed to bring joy Kai was right. They needed to start acting more like vargs and less like playful little pups all the time. Dakota laughed at what Kai said. "Did you see the size of that mouth? She could have bit my head off with one bite!" Hmm, well your the rabbit catching expert, he added with a smile. "Or maybe we can dig something out of its den? "But you get to go first, cause if its a Badger, I don't want to be the one with my head in the whole!" his eyes flashed as he said this, laughing he said "I'm just kidding! Lets see what is wondering about at this time of day".

The weather was changing again, bright stars were now visable shining brightly in the sky, along with the ever watchful gaze of Tor. It had gotten darker too, which seemed to symbolize dark times ahead for the two varg. He could already tell it was going to get cold fast, and they would have to find someplace to stay out of the weather, slong with something to eat.
"I know, I bet she could've swallowed us both at once!" He began walking around, his nose to the ground trying to detect any small lear that would make a suitable meal. He couldn't see any signs of dens because of the heavy snow. This blanketed area of the forest was still pure and trackless, except for where Kai and Dakota were stepping. Kai's pws left large, four-toed racks in the snow as he continued searching for food. Suddenly, he lifted his head to Dakota and spoke, "I think I've found the trail of a badger, but I'm not sure. Want to try following it?" He had never hunted badger before and didn't know what to look for, but he figured there was a first time for everything.
