OOC: This takes place before Silvanus' meeting with Hyde at the castle. Edit: This thread is now open to all.
Summer had swelled into full blossom, with the rays of Fenris beaming proudly down upon the land of his kin. Up the river, creek gnats hummed wearily in the shimmering heat, and even under trees where mottled sunshine filtered down, the air seemed heavy with the warmth of the day. Winter had been forgotten by nature, and so much the better; the bitter cold of Transylvania was no laughing matter. In the minds of all the lera, though, there was nothing but the heat and the gilded sunshine of another day.
Though the trees provided little respite from Fenris' heated gaze, havens did exist if one was blessed with either experience or luck. For a limping, black Varg, the latter had carried his wayfaring path to the head of a waterfall, and as the quenching shade and coolness of moist air rolled over him, he found himself thanking the wolf god whose graces he had moments before been questioning. As Silvanus dipped his head, he briefly recalled the winter before when he had seen friendly Varg up the river and couldn't help but doubt that he was fortunate enough to have the place to himself. His mismatched eyes of white and gold swept left, then right, then closed as he quaffed a mouthful of the cool waters in the pool at the base of the fall.
The gentle, almost hypnotic roar of the waterfall rang in his ears, and he listened intently as it mingled with the bubbling of the pool where it drained off toward the river. For a moment, he fancied he could almost hear words forming in the gentle bellow; he caught himself as he began trying to divine some meaning in the meaningless din, though. A pup's whimsy, Silvanus. You are too old for this. His thoughts clamored over the noises of the water, and he remembered himself and opened his eyes to the lush scenery of the forest and the stones and the water. Something odd about the heavy afternoon caused the feeling of portent to linger, though, whether real or imagined.

Fenris's warm rays traveled down to the world below. Showering the summer afternoon in Transylvania, a pleasure to all Lera. With the harsh winter behind them, the Lera were free from fear of blizzards and hunger. Birds chirped with renewed strength from their sleep in their nests. Their happy voices traveling through the evergreen trees that surrounded a cascading waterfall.
Carved out over time form the elements, the waterfall was a sight to marvel and cherish. With gleaming water as clear as crystal and as cool as ice, the waterfall was the best place to be for a summer day. Rocks jutted out from the sides of the vast lake where the waterfall's endless water pooled into. Tufts of moss and algae grew on the grey wet rocks, providing very little grip for small paws. Fenris's streaming rays poked through the trees and landed on the crystal pool, making it sparkle and shine further. A summer afternoon to play by the waterfall was a adventure to all pups of all ages. Or a place to ponder on life's unanswered questions.
Two white paws dangled at the edge of protruding rock, connected to a body of black fur. Blue eyes stared out into the depths of the lake, looking back at it's owner's reflection. Shadow could hardly recognize herself, having grown since she had suddenly been cast out to survive the wild by herself. Her once small body of a small fox had grown twice its size. Her muscles had hardened through the tough trails she had used. Shadow's once cub soft fur was losing it's edge, becoming less fluffy and more.......rough. At a age of 4 months old, Shadow had lost nearly a fourth of her playfulness. Spending the last few weeks in her den in Koran preparing for any casualties and pondering on life's questions, rather than out playing and rolling in the leaves.
So many questions.....yet not enough answers. Shadow's eyes focused on her reflection. Glowering at her white diamond marking. The one that she thought ruined her life more than it should. Dipping her front paws into the clear water below, Shadow's mind whirled. What is the meaning of life when you're just gunna die after wards? What's the point of it all? Shadow watched as ripples appeared on the surface of the water. Why are Vargs so scared of water when such a single touch of our paw can make it tremble? Shadow watched with dazzling eyes as the ripples traveled on to the far sides of the lake.

The haloed glare of the light filtering filtering to the trees and reflecting garishly off of the rock faces and ever-changing water surfaces temporarily lent a hazy glow to the aesthetically pleasing riverside. Silvanus lazily swept the area with his one good eye, and was about to resume drinking when he noticed a form he was not sure had been there a few moments ago. It was another varg, scarcely more than a pup, hued in a pelt of black with a few splashes of white. She appeared preoccupied with her reflection and had, perhaps, not noticed him.
His first instinct as a kerl was to turn and slip back into the verdure of the foliage without so much as making his presence known, but he stopped mid-skulk. What reason was there not to have a bit of conversation, after all? Silvanus was the last varg who would deign to judge based upon looks, given his own raggle-taggle nature, but his first impression of this young fae was not one of intimidation.
How she stares at the water, he thought. Almost like she's looking through a window to some other plane of time or thought. Thinking twice about disturbing her, partially for politeness' sake and partially hoping not to scare her, he hobbled a few steps in her direction.
"Hello there," Silvanus greeted finally, deciding the direct approach most favorable. It had been quite a while since he had spoken to someone her age, but he fancied that it wasn't anything with which to concern himself. "These falls have a sort of hypnotic quality to them, don't they? I hate to unsettle your reverie, but this humble kerl prefers words to silence."
Silvanus, watching her expression before he'd spoke, could not decide if she looked pensive or sad or perhaps even begrudging. Wearing a countenance of curiosity, he rested his haunches in the tall grass and swept his tail gently in a friendly way. The wafting scent of something....a pack? A somewhat familiar pack?...reached him. "If I may, miss, might I ask where you are from?" The smell conjured images of woods at night but he could not recall the time or place they accompanied.
Either way, he was a collector of stories and one more on his way to find the dwelling of Wolfbane, the place where many a wolven saga had grown, could hurt little more than the perpetual minutes sliding by.

As the ripples from Shadow's paw stretched out to the farthest corners of the lake, the wolf cub let out a long impatient sigh. Why do I even bother to try finding out these answers that no one knows Shadow uttered a growl of annoyance. Ears flicked at the soft paw steps of a nearby Lera. Not wanting to jump to conclusions, Shadow continued to occupy her mind with new questions she had come up out of no where.
Probably a squirrel or rabbit. If I could I would talk to perhaps all the Lera there are, but Tor and Fenris have not granted any Varg with this ability. In fact they seem to like the humans more than us. After all to create such a creature that is now considered the top Putnar. Shadow laid her head down onto her paw. Letting only one of them dip into the watery surface of the glass like surface. "Hello there." Shadow lifting her gaze from the lake and turned her head toward the source of the greeting.
Her blue eyes finally made their way toward a midnight black Mann. Head cocking at his mismatched eyes. One that was gold and the other a silvery white. "These falls have a sort of hypnotic quality to them, don't they? I hate to unsettle your reverie, but this humble Kerl prefers words to silence." Shadow's ears twitched with joy at the Mann's words that seem to weave themselves into music. Shadow grinned at the Mann, sensing nothing wrong at his appearance. "If I may, miss, might I ask where you are from?" Shadow wagged her own tail along with the stranger, giving him her full attention.
"Good day to you, sir. Although I must apologize for not noticing you earlier. As you've said before, these falls do have a hypnotic quality. I come here often to ponder on life's mysteries." Shadow smiled at the Kerl, turning her head toward the thundering falls. "Where I came from you ask? I come from my pack, Koran. We take up at least half of the forest and parts of the valley. We are indeed a large pack. "Shadow said giving a small thump with her tail giving a small chuckle before turning her gaze back at the Kerl.
"My name's Shadowwolf. If you'd like Shadow for short. And what honor was I bestowed to meet such a gentleman like yourself?" Shadow asked, cocking her head to the side in question. Showing some of her cubbish side still. Perhaps I have not just quite lost all of my cubbish traits. Shadow thought pleased at her find. Her sapphire blue hues locked onto those of the Mann's. Staring into their gold and silvery white depths.

The hot, angry gaze of the sun beat down on the land. Birds sang Summer Triumphant, and a varg could easily hear the rodents and insects moving through the grass. Winter was gone and the little varg that trudged wearily through the small grove of trees missed it. She turned her silver gaze up towards the sky and briefly glared at it, wishing it was cooler.
Most vargs welcomed summer, and really it wasn't that hot, but the sun's heat got trapped in the pups dark fur, and all she wanted was some water. She truly despised the heat. "Is it really to much to ask?" she muttered quietly. Her voice was high and lilting, with an odd accent for these parts. She had no idea of her surroundings yet, and she wanted to find a lake, or a pond. A puddle, if you must! ‘talking to yourself is a sign of insanity.’ She hated that little anti-conscious. She knew it was only the practical part of her mind talking to her, but she still hated it. When she was alone, she very well didn't have to act practical! 'yes you do.' Suddenly, her head came up. Water! "Thank the gods!"
She came up around the corner. She slowly stopped as she saw two vargs in conversation. One, a black mann, was full grown. The other was a dark-furred cub, with splashes of white on her paws, nose, and tail. Wow, she looks a bit like me. Faolan pondered over this. She shook those random thoughts out of her mind for now. She wondered if she should find a different place to drink, because if she drank here, the vargs would notice her. But she was thirsty. So, trying to act like she knew what she was doing, carefully keeping her eyes averted to keep attention from herself, and slinking towards the ground, just a bit, she carefully picked her way through the grass towards the waters edge.
Her paw caught under a stone, and she rolled over herself, right into the water with a big splash. If wolves could blush, she would look like a ripe tomato. She sat up in the shallow part of the lake, cocked her head, her right ear, starkly contrasting with the rest of her face, flopped over into her eye, looking altogether awkward and embarrassed, and gave a shy little grin ”Hullo. Names Faolan.”

The ebon mann was pleased that the younger fae did not jump at the sound of his voice; it was not infrequently that even his mismatched eyes or gawkish gait startled any company which might cross his path. It had not been so very long since he had been exiled for the so-called sacrilege that was his appearance, not so very long since he was the burgeoning age of this new acquaintance. At least, it didn't feel like it had been so long, though his thoughts of it had dulled with time and neglect. At any rate, it was nice to be well-met.
And as the young fae spoke, Silvanus could not hide the pleasant surprise on his visage at her words and vocal mannerisms. She did not speak as though she was any younger than he himself, nor did she forgo the more affable and polite accoutrements of speech. The tone was unexpected, but more than welcome to the wandering gentleman.
"Koran...my encounters with your pack have been only amiable thus far." Silvanus smiled a gracious grin that reached his eyes, and dipped his head respectfully. "And may I say, my dear, they must consider themselves lucky to have such a pleasant young ward as yourself. The honor is all mine. My name is--"
At that moment, a wet splash caught his attention, and with ears pricked forward, he twisted his head curiously around. Another young female varg was sitting in the shallow end of the waterfall's basin, looking a bit sheepish but not enough to shy away. Her coat actually resembled Shadow's to an extent, and for a moment he wondered if perhaps they knew each other; her introduction led him to believe otherwise, however. Silvanus gave her a disarming smile, and sat down on his haunches with a bit of heaviness afforded by his bad hind leg, so that he could see the both of them without much difficulty.
"Greetings, Faolan," Silvanus responded, waving his tail languidly in salutation. This new young arrival did not seem hostile, or anything but a bit embarrassed at her tumble. "It would seem Fenris has seen fit to send me two new acquaintances. Dear me," he chuckled more to himself. On such a carefree day, it was nice to have conversation to match. The burdens of a wandering kerl of his structure would always be there, but to forget about them for a while was nice.
He then remembered himself, and introduced himself to both of them. "Oh, excuse me...My name is Silvanus. If some errand does not prevent you, you're welcome to come over here and enjoy a chat and this fair locale."

Shadow's blue eyes bore deeper into that of the Mann's. Her thoughts still producing more and more questions for her to answer. Shadow gave out a small growl of pleasure as the Mann began to reply to her greeting. Shadow's ears flicked as a sound of splashing water came from behind her. Drops of water was sent flying, some of them landing on the nearby rocks and some on Shadow's tail. Shadow whirled around, surprised at the sudden sound, yet she showed no signs of it on her face.
There sitting in the shallows of the lake was another Varg. A pup like herself, black with white fur markings. Looking embarrassed in the water shallows of the lake, the pup turned it's attention to Shadow and Silvanus. Shadow choked back a laugh of surprised and amusement at the young Fae. Sitting on the smooth rock facing the lake, Shadow sat in between the two Vargs. Giving her all she needed to look at the two of them at the same time. What a surprise! Are there any others that have not revealed themselves? Shadow's tail thumped along the surface of the rock.
Shadow's face lit up with a cheery smile at the two Vargs. "The name suits you well, Silvanus." Shadow said before turning her attention to the newcomer."Nice to meet you, Faolan. As Silvanus has already said, you are welcome to make yourself comfortable here." Flicking her tail with ease as Shadow looked back at the watery depths of the lake."If I may ask, what has brought both of you here today?" Shadow asked, her eyes riveted on the water.

ooc- sorry zostar, i edited
Faolan mentally checked herself for injuries, and found she must have hit her head. It didn’t hurt much, so she shook it off. Faolan gave a quiet smile, and shook her head a bit, trying to get her ear out of her face. It wasn’t working.
The dark mann had an elegant way of speaking, and from his expression, he seemed very kind. His offer of staying by the pool and talking was very tempting. And then the cub that looked so much like Faolan herself spoke, asking why they were there. The fae looked to be just a little bit older than herself, and had a hint of a laugh in her voice. But that might of just been from her fall.
Faolan smiled,“It‘s very nice to meet you both." She wondered at how different the two vargs voices sounded from hers. “Actually, I‘ve just been trying to get my bearings of the area. I‘m new round here.” She tried to mimic their way of speaking, but her lilting voice was incapable of doings so. It very well got on her nerves. She hated sounding different, and the way vargs looked at her when she spoke. She leaned down and lapped up some of the clear, cool water. She looked up at them with her large silver orbs and quietly assessed them.
Yes, the young fae looked quite a bit like herself, except her eyes were a pretty blue and green. and the mann had dark fur, and light silver streaks on his flanks. She looked at his hind leg and silver eye and felt very sad. ‘maybe this is why he looks so lonely. Why can’t vargs be nice?’ The little anti-conscious answered back, and for once didn’t have something smart to say.’ because if they were nice, they’d have to try to understand.’
That time it sounded like her mother when she was telling the pup the facts of life. She suddenly felt like she was a thousand years old. It hurt her to think about her pack. her thoughts traveled to her brother, Shoulen, and she wondered if he was alive or not. she quickly shook those thoughts from her head, turning them instead to her current situation. They both seemed very nice, and she hadn’t had a decent conversation in forever. It would be nice to sit down and possibly make some friends.
Faolan gave a quiet smile “And may I ask the same as… er, I’m sorry, I’m afraid I don’t know your name ” she said, smiling prettily at the black and white fae.

With an air of polite amusement, Silvanus watched the bedraggled pup shake most of the water off and flip her ear off her face, only to have it fall back in place. She seemed spirited enough, but he suspected from her reserved smile there was a bit of shyness she was trying to overcome. Meeting new acquaintances, and perhaps new friends, was always frightening when he was a pup. And in all fairness, it still is, he thought silently. The air wafted no pack scents to him from the new arrival; it was possible she was a kerl, but for some reason the thought shocked and worried him that a cub of no more than three moons might be wandering about in the Transylvanian wilderness unaccompanied. There was probably a story behind it, but he had yet to make up his mind if it would be impolite to inquire.
Shadow, on the other hand, seemed rather at-ease with the conversation and the company. Something about the way she met his gaze. It was like she was looking deeper than most bothered, but rather than making him uncomfortable he only found himself intrigued. The pretty young fae had a quiet grace that seemed to transcend her youth. He returned to the translucent sapphire orbs when she inquired as to the nature of her new companions’ wanderings. ”I suppose you’d say I go wherever my paws take me, and I suppose their fancy has taken me here for the moment.” Inasmuch as some wolves had calls of duty and places in the world, Silvanus had nothing of the sort. Some vargs may have looked at freedom enviously, but there were times when the yawning sky and spreading landscape was a blessing, and times when it was an infinitely-branching prison from which there was no escape. ”As I’ve nothing much else to occupy my time, I call myself a collector of faces, and a gatherer of stories. I’ve been called a philosopher and an intellectual, at times,” Silvanus said, then gave his companions a wink. ”And a worthless wayfarer at others. But I leave it to others to decide which I am, either way.”
The mann was rather enjoying the banter, nascent though it was, and hoped he was not coming across as too erudite or presuming as sometimes he did. The physically unsteady varg was by now accustomed to, if not battle, then certainly intimidation from his peers, or at the very least an uneasy fight-or-flight when meeting a new brute with the brawn and kilter he lacked. How nice to meet the young and the gentle. Silvanus held his tongue there, though, for the black-and-white fae named Faolan asked Shadow for an introduction, and he did not wish to interrupt.

Fenris's light rays shone down to the lake, making the water sparkle and shine. The nearby harmonic chirps of birds rang out and entangled themselves into the evergreen branches. Squirrels barked away before giving into a game of chase. A blur of grey and brown fur as they whirled around the tree. A flurry of feathers were sent up and into the light blue sky, the soft downy feathers floating to the ground. Gently and gently till they reached the moist fertile soil below.
White tipped ears perked at the Silvanus's reply, making Shadow's tail wave in the wind. Her sapphire blue eyes sparkled in curiosity and excitement. "To be able to go with the flow seems to be just right. I on the other hand seem to head the other way once in a while. It's been along time since I heard a tale from far away. Perhaps we could share a few." Shadow inquired. Yes stories would be nice, but life is not a story. Nothing is make believe and everything is very, very real. Faolan's voice brought Shadow back from her thoughts.
Shadow's tail twitched in embarrassment at Faolan's question. "I'm sorry about that. My name's Shadowwolf, Shadow for short." Her white paws dangling off the sides of the rock. "To answer my own question, I come here every now and then. Mostly to collect herbs and such. Although today I came to ponder on unanswered questions." Letting out a long sigh before staring down at the deep pool, her mind spreading out and beginning to wonder. Soon tired of the still waters, Shadow's lids closed half way over her eyes. With the warm rays that heated her back, Shadow fell into a trance. Staring at the water before making the surface distorted with her paw. Ripples were small waves in the stand still lake, but with a sudden flick of her paw Shadow could easily send the water flying.

Faolan cocked her head, and smiled. “it‘s very nice to meet you , Shadow. You come here to collect herbs? Are you a healer?” Faolan looked at the fae. She hardly looked to be four or five months old. But there was an intelligence in Shadow’s eyes that could hardly make her doubt that she couldn’t know anything about healing, and she realized she wasn’t really surprised.
Faolan turned to Silvanus. He suddenly reminded her of her father, the way his eyes seemed to see right through her, as if he could see all her thoughts and wishes. “ Oh yes” she said in her lilting voice. “I very much agree with Shadow. A few stories would be wonderful.” She gave a slightly wistful smile, remembering all the stories she knew from her own land. Of Tor and Fenris, but also of many other gods, some nearly as important, others mere faerie kings and queens, elves and brownies, that could make mistakes in their magician’s magick. Tales of dragons, and the brave wolves who dared face their wrath. Of mysterious sea serpents that would either eat you, or grant you your greatest desire.
She quietly watched Shadow for a moment or so. It looked as if she was trying to manipulate the water, or as if she saw something in it, that had captured her utmost attention. All of a sudden, her stomach chose to complain. She looked somewhat sheepish for a moment, trying to remember the last time she ate. She caught movement from the corner of her eye. She saw several large fish, silver scales glinting rainbow colors in the sunlight. She sat very still, waiting for one to come a bit closer. She looked at the one that did in shock. It was huge! It was nearly as big as she was. She realized that she was on a sort of ledge, where the water dropped of very suddenly, so she decided it best not to pounce on the behemoth. She leaned over a bit, and it came a bit closer, a bit closer, just a bit, YES! She leaned over, dragged it onto the rock ledge before it could struggle and pull her down.
She quickly dragged it out, pulling very hard, hitting dry ground and bit hard just below it’s giant head, killing it instantaneously, and flumped down on the soft, mossy ground, feeling a bit tired. If the thing was nearly as big as her, it certainly weighed more. She looked up at the two older vargs. “ Lunch anyone?” she quietly inquired, head cocked, looking quietly up at them, breathless from her struggle.

OOC: Sorry for the bit of a wait on this post!
To be sure, neither of the youths’ ages typified their personalities. Silvanus sat musing in quiet intrigue at his new companions. One had a reserved, philosophic attitude that was not that far from his own, and the other reflected the happiness of her age but was quicker and stronger than she looked as she pulled a floundering fish out of the pool. The grown Varg himself probably couldn’t have managed it so smoothly; of course, he hadn’t the depth perception nor the balance of the average cub.
”Impressive, Faolan,” conceded the ebon mann with a respecting nod. ”I daresay I know many a Varg that couldn’t have done that so smoothly.” As to the invitation, he cast a glance at Shadow; he knew his manners. There may have been less-refined men that would have shouldered their youngers out of the way to get at the food, but responsibility to them was not lost on the gentleman. He’d wait and eat only if there was anything left after they were done.
Shadowwolf’s words and tone piqued his curiosity. ”Shadow,” he said. ”If I may ask, to what unanswered questions do you refer? I don’t purport to know the answers but I admit I’m curious as to their nature.” As a precaution, he wanted to make sure he didn’t rend any foundations of potential friendship by overstepping his bounds. He smiled in his disarming manner. ”Of course, I don’t mean to pry, and you’re under no obligation to tell me.”
Fenris was still warming the grove and she shade was still cooling it. The decor was that of verdancy and mottled sunshine, the music the quiet burble of the falls and the whisper of a summer breeze. It was decent story-telling weather, and he wasn’t hastened by any place to be at the moment. He didn’t know if he’d tell one just yet, but he suspected if the need arose an appropriate yarn would come to him. In the mien time, he sat amiably and listened to his young friends.

As Fenris's warmth traveled down from the air around the black and white cub and began to sink into her fur. Getting lazily onto her paws before stretching out her small body. Flexing her paws and stretching her numb legs. Her mouth opening wide, revealing her small pearly whites and shaking her coat. Tensing her legs and then launching herself off the rock she had perched on. Then neatly sprang across the lake, hopping across the river with ease. Her paws touched the mossy rocks in the middle of the pool. Reaching the other side in seconds flat.
Shadow grinned at Faolan, swishing her tail back and forth. "Yep. My mother taught me everything there is to healing illnesses and wounds. We alw- used to come here every now and then to collect herbs to store." Shadow barked out, flinching at the last sentence. "Yeah....used to." This time she mumbled under her breath. Sighing before watching the large silvery bodies of fish swimming underneath.
The water beneath Shadow's gazing eyes became distorted. Reeling her head back in shock before hearing the squelch of mud. Turning her eyes into Faolan's direction, Shadow watched as the Fae dragged out large fish onto the banks. "Nice catch Faolan!" Shadow barked out looking at the size of the wriggling beast. "Thanks for the offer, but I already ate." Shadow said giving a small dip of her head, reflecting to the earlier part of the day where she caught her own meal.
Turning her body toward Silvanus's direction, before saying anything further. "Go ahead Silvanus. Thanks for waiting for me." A smile grew and flourished on her face. "No need to apologize Silvanus. Curiosity gets to all of us. The unanswered questions I am pondering about is about life itself." Her eyes wondering off the Mann and onto the sky above. Like why Tor and Fenris made the world so. Why do we all die, no matter young nor old, if Tor and Fenris love us so. Why do they want to tear families apart? Why? Why is all I have to ask." Shadow said still staring out into the trees. Letting a small gust of wind to send some of the tree's pines onto her maw. "Yes, why?" Shadow said her eyes began to well up with unwanted tears.

Faolan smiled a bit uncertainly at Silvanus’ compliment. She hadn’t done it that smoothly, she rarely did anything smoothly. She noticed him glance at Shadow, to see what she said. She smiled again, this time certain, but it was still soft. These vargs she had ran into were very polite and very kind. There weren’t many like this left in the world. She was proof of it, alone and defenseless. But she noticeably jumped when Shadow quite literally flew from the rock she had been sitting on over the stretch of water next to Faolan’s side. Eyes wide for a second, she quickly gained control of her expression. She grinned, about to comment on Shadow’s well executed jump, when something in her voice caught her attention. She muttered something under her breath, a tad bitterly. She gazed at Shadow for a second, whose eyes were locked on the ground. She suddenly realized a lot about Shadow, and what happened to her to make her this upset. Loss of a mother was different from everything, from the loss of a brother, father, or a friend, because it felt like she was your life source, like you were still connected to her by that umbilical cord, and your life force had been torn unceremoniously away.
In her high voice, not wanting to say words that would choke her up, she reverted to her native language, giving a common blessing in her quick, high tongue, so they wouldn‘t recognize that her voice was cracking. Seeing other vargs in pain upset her. She hated the fact that, usually, she couldn‘t help. “Hynny sy cerddedig breswylio i mewn 'ch asgre, Chysgoda.” She gave Shadow a soft, sad smile. This was a blessing said after some one died. ‘Those who are gone reside in your heart, Shadow.’
She quickly set to chewing the fish into three pieces, nudging the one of the larger ones to Silvanus. He looked like he hadn’t had a proper meal in a few suns. She couldn’t have even eaten a fourth of the fish by herself, and she had a good portion of it, even with the large piece she’d given Silvanus. She looked at Shadow seriously this time. “Are you sure you aren‘t hungry?” Her eyes were soft now, like liquid silver, but warm, not molten. She liked her new acquaintances, and she was sad Shadow was upset. She realized she was crying. She quietly walked up to the bigger cub, and licked her face where her tears had stained her fur. “I‘m no gonna say it‘s alright, ‘cause its not, but I will say that it‘ll be better soon. It‘ll never be perfect, but in time, it won‘t be as hard, and you won‘t feel like your heart‘s being ripped out of your chest every time you think about her, let alone mention her. I don‘t know how to answer that, I think some vargs have an idea, but no one truly knows, yah know?.”

The two black-and-white cubs joined each other, looking almost like sisters as they exchanged friendly words and looks. Silvanus felt a jab of guilt when Shadow answered his question, though; he hadn't realized what a sensitive topic he had so unwittingly raked across with his inquiry. It seemed Shadow had her fair share of trials and tribulations for one her age, and it did a bit to explain her pensive attitude when untried pups often adopted a more playful demeanor. He shifted uncomfortably when he saw the glisten of tears on her furred cheek, mentally reprimanding himself for prying. It was sometimes his way, and his life as a kerl had afforded him a solitary enough life thus far that sometimes he was inept at determining boundaries. His habits of curiosity did not often serve him well.
But Faolan seemed to be making right what he had bungled. She was doing an admirable job of producing words of comfort and friendship, and more importantly optimism. He felt the need to interject. "Faolan is correct," Silvanus declared in his soothing intonation. "Time eases hurt. Take it from an old Varg who, once upon a time, shared that same hurt." A shadow seemed to play behind Silvanus' mismatched orbs, as images of his mother from years past were conjured in his mind's eye. His desire was not to downplay her pain, but rather to show empathy.
"I hope it's some consolation, at least," he continued after a moment, offering a smile. "Only Fenris and Tor know the reason behind their designs, but it is for us to trust that they have a plan for us and that the things that happen not only happen for a reason, but will turn out right in the long run."
As to the fish, which had by this time been divided into portions by Faolon, a piece had been nudged appetizingly before him, and he couldn't ignore the churning of his stomach. He hadn't had especially good hunting in some time; it was hard to run down prey by brute force when one only had three viable legs for locomotion. When faced with the choice of being embarrassed or grateful, though, he chose the latter and dipped his head at Faolan. "Thank you, my dear," Silvanus credited. "It's very generous of you. I consider myself lucky to be in such good company." With not much else springing to mind and a welcome if not unexpected meal sitting before him, he lowered his head and, putting a steadying the meat with one paw, took a bite.
