History:
The Chukchi people of Siberia are known for their sled dogs, (the original creators of the Siberian husky) Once a year they travel south to a special gathering to show off their dogs. In their culture the dog is a symbol of status and there are legends of the loss of their dogs and the last two pups suckeling a human woman and becoming the dogs of their culture and religion. They say a dog guards the gates of heaven and those who were cruel to a dog during their time on earth are denied entry.
The chief of the Chukchi had brought along his best bitch to be studded at the gathering. But was disappointed in the prospects. A fellow dog musher told him if he took the bitch south to the border of the Carpathian Mountains and tied her out in the forest, he would gain strong wolf blood for his lines. Interested in strengthening his lines the chief traveled to the mountains with his eldest son. There at the border, the bitch was tied to a tree, a strong looking Varg bred her. Most likely a balkar. The Chief and his son returned home.
The agouti angel was born on a beautiful afternoon. Yuriy had been watching the pregnant bitch closely. His father the chief had told him he could have any male from the litter to start his team and help him on his way to becoming a man. There were 4 pups, 3 males and one female. Yuriy was drawn to the female. Although a male was worth much more and the female pups were usually killed after birth Yuriy wanted her. He told his father of his decision and his father was angered. But Yuriy persisted and named her Sitka.
At the age of 9 months Sitka was leading Yuriy sled team. At the age of one year she was holding bears at bay during hunts with the humans. Yuriy had grown to love her very much. The village was proud of her for winning them honors in the village races.
She loved Yuriy with all her heart, so much that sometimes she wished the gods would let her become human or at least learn to speak their strange tongue. He was the son of the human chief, she was his dog. He cared not that she was tainted Varg. He shared his den with her and fed her before he fed the other dogs. She had saved his life many times by judging the ice on seal hunts and keeping him alert to the bear and other Putnar. In return he trained her to become a jewel among sled dogs a dog sought after by many men. But her heart was pure and her fame and gifts did not corrupt her spirit.
Her life was not an easy one, the dogs found her worthless, they said she was between two worlds and did not belong even though the humans found value in her, she was allowed to work at every task available to a dog. Some that not all dogs could perform well......such as lead dog, hunting companion, and ah yes guardian........ That is where she had failed.
At this time in history the Chukchi were being perused by the Russian armies during a time when they sought to conquer all. The Russians chased the tribes on reindeer but the dogs were too fast and the Chukchi escaped for a time. The Russians became aware of the dogs’ abilities and set out to destroy the sled dogs and the Chukchi way of life, by killing the dogs or breeding other unfit dogs into the bloodlines bringing sickness and diminishing the once prized speed of the huskies.
This is how her life came to change forever, Yuriy had taken the team out hunting bear. They had cornered a polar bear out on the ice. Something had gone wrong and the bear killed the other dogs leaving only Sitka. Yuriy tried to save his dogs and was mauled severely. Sitka pulled the young man back to the village herself, terror seized her heart as she approached smoldering blackened earth where the village once stood. The Russians had found her home while they were hunting. The Men had killed most everyone and everything, the reindeer were gone, and most of the dogs were dead. A few humans and dogs stood in the desolation. Yuriy’s father rushed upon his son speaking fast and harsh. Sitka could not understand him. She turned to look at her fellow dogs. One dog gave her a look of hate and whispered, “The dragga blames you for this. You were not here to protect us and now the young dragga is dieing because of you. Sitka you are banished from us. You are exiled once lead dog of our team…….”
She did not hear the rest, he had said Yuriy was dieing. Her sapphire pools turned to the human. Pain casting a film over her vision. The Chief turned to grab Sitka (she did not know it was to hug her) and she balked away. He called to her but her anguish was too great over the loss of Yuriy. She bolted heading South west and into the terra of the Carpathian Mountains ………………
