Spring had arrived and with it brought heavy showers, thunderstomrs and even snow. Now the meadow was wet, sogy and still filled with some slushy snow. The grass had yet to turn a lush green and a brilliant red hued pup stood out. At the edge of the woods it looked out, eyes seraching, ears twitching in all driections, standing still like a statue. It seemed silent, waiting....suddenly"A meadow!A meadow!" she yipped loudly, running towards the large feild of grasses. Laughing excitdely, running through the muddy puddles. Unaware of any danger that might be lurking. She laughed, running towards the large grasses as a huge form took wing to the sky, eyes golden, talons extended as it looked down upon the small pup

A shower rippled through the forest, drenching all in its path. Including the white wolf picking her way through the underbrush. "Typical." Rain washed over her scarred, white body as she navigated a dense thicket of thorns. She did not seem to notice that as the rain touched her glowing scarlet eyes, it sizzled into steam. Mayan looked up at the angry gray clouds in sullen defiance, then continued her slow pace through the brambles. Finally, covered in thorns and burrs, she reached a large meadow. The storm seemed to have skipped over this pristene place, and it was here Mayan sat down to perform the tedious task of pulling thorns. "Ow, Ow, OW!" There was a tricky thorn lodged in her rigt front paw pad. As she worried it with her teeth, her eyes traveled up to the skies where a hawk circled She admired how the flying putnar scoped out its prey, then dove for the kill. Curious to see what it was homing in on, Mayan looked into the tall grass. A red scrap cavorted among the grasses and flowers. Was it a fox kit? With its red fur it might be. No, it was a pup! With a yelp, Mayan forgot her paw and ran out into the meadow. T he hawk dived, becoming Nature's ballistic missile... Mayan ran, forcing her legs and lungs to the limit... The shadow of the putnar raced along the grass... The pup was just ahead... So was the bird... Mayan dove over the young one and felt razor-sharp talons tear bloody lines across her back. Suprised, the hawk wheeled and gained altitude, flying off in search of another meal. Mayan, panting, felt blood running down her sides but payed it no heed. She focused on the pup between her front paw. "Are you all right, little one?

The hawk plunged down Nahma looked up in horror, her legs frozen but mind telling her to run, hide or do something!"Mother!" she yelped as she closed her eyes, suddenly she opened one, it was peacful agian. She opened her eyes and saw a white she-wolf standing above her, blood on her back and her coat a bit dirty and wet. Nahma wagged her tail, rolling over to show her belly and gave big puppy eyes."Nope!" she yipped excitedly"I`m okie dokie!" she smiled, letting her toungue flop out and moved her legs in the air as she was on her back."The.....thing tried to eat me!" she got up, and started jumping up to the older varg`s face, licking and yipping

Mayan dodged little puppy licks that assaulted her muzzle. "Yes, indeed, that thing did try to eat you. That was a hawk, a flying putnar. They normally eat rabbits and rodents, things like that, but apparently you were just small enough to make a meal. Now, if you'll excuse me for just a second.." She went off a little into the tall grass, for she believed that pups should not see this sort of thing. Rolling onto her back in the dewy grass, she rolled, cleaning the wound and leaving bloody streaks on the ground. Re-emerging from the grass, she spoke kindly to the little pup. With a glance into the pup's eye she had Seen the little one's name, Nahma, but had not lingered to find out anything more. Now, she smiled, the grin distorting the black scars on her muzzle. Her scarlet eyes literally glowed warmly and she remarked o the remarkable powers of pups to accept the unusual. Nahma had looked at Mayan like she was just another varg, even though she was anything but. "So, Nahma,-never mind how I know your name-where did you come from? You are too young to be out on your own. I doubt you even know how to hunt!" This was not meant as an insult, she was merely stating her mind.

Nahma watched the white wolf walk off and as she sat there, nipping at the grass the she-varg came back and smiled warmly. Bahma wagged her tail and listened but she suddenly stepped back and growled. "I can catch lera!" she protested and then raised her tail proudly as she flopped over and showed her belly"I cought a dragon fly all by myself!"she kicked her feet in the air, looking up to the wolf as if her running in the air would impress her.

Mayan could not help but smile, the grin distorting her battered muzzle. Her scarlet eyes glowed with amusement. "A whole dragon fly, eh? Well, a dragon fly isn't really considered lera, but, if you took down the fiercest of the insects, you seem like you're about ready to move up to the next level. How about mice? Mice are tricky and fast, but would be the perfect size for a pup like you. Hey, do you want to hear a secret? I didn't know how to hunt anything bigger than reodents until just recently when my friend Falstaf showed me. However, I am still an expert at the apprehension and consu, ption of these little creatures. Would you like to learn? You're going to have to, eventually. Might as well start somewhere." She waited for a reply from Nahma as her red orbs expertly sought out a little burrow. These meadows were riddled with them. There! Her tail wagged with triunph. Mayan looked to the little varg. "Well?"

The pup`s eyes widened, her tail wagged and she looked up with great admiration to the wise white wolf. "I love chasing mice!" she yipped ecitedly, mice seemed to group all kinds of rodents for Nahma. Rats, badgers, chip munks all semed mice to her. "I like pouncing on them! But they bite and get away"she yipped, she looked down and at her paw where she cornerd a rat and was bitten.

Mayan grinned, eager to have a willing pupil. "Yes, rodents do bite and it hurts, but there are ways around that. The first is suprise. You sneak up on the burrow like so...." Mayan edged her way through the grass to the mouse burrow she had spotted. Laying down silently by the little hole, she remained perfectly still. Within minutes, a rodent's whiskered nose poked out. Red eyes tracked the mouse as it emerged tentatively from the burrow. As soon as the tip of its tail cleared the hole's entrance, a white paw flashed, crushing the rodent and killing it instantly. "The second is swiftness. You must kill the prey quickly so that it does not suffer." She nudged the dead mouse with her nose. "Now you may eat. That is how you hunt. I scented another burrow nearby. Would you like to try?"

Nahma watched intently and yipped, bouncing around when the wise wolf caught the small mouse. Nahma grinned cunningly and shook the mouse before she threw it in the air and pounced on it with a smile and wagging tail. (oooo nice avatar! i have to find out where people get these!)
