The winter sun blazed feebly in the sky, giving off plenty light but barely any heat. A lone black wolf cub padded along through the fresh snow, her eyes sparkling and her tail held high. For once, her parents had let her go hunt rabbits by herself, and she had been sucessful, judging by the streaks of fresh blood adorning her muzzle. She began to pad faster as she neared the den, eager to tell the pack of her fearless hunting of the small Lera. As she passed into the small valley and neared the magnificent cavern, her nose twitched and she smelled blood. She crept towards the cave.
Depth gasped. Her whole pack lay still on the dusty stone floor of the cavern, their eyes staring sightlessly at the ceiling, their throats torn open, their blood still flowing. The whole cave smelled sickeningly of the Balkar. Tears sprang to her eyes. Never again would she nuzzle her mother, chase mice with her father, learn stories from Latha, snap at the Sikla, argue with her littermates. She was completely alone.
Depth couldn't stand it anymore. The cave had once been welcoming, but was now filled with the cloying scent of death. She turned and ran, ran, ran, until her legs could take it no longer. She had reached the edge of the woods, filled with strange noises and shadows. Too exhausted to think, she simply let her body collapse into a heap on the forest floor, feeling useless and unloved.
