a prologue;Kerls and Pack wolves are welcome to join in, this is not a private thread.
The sky was bright and blue, and above their heads the songbirds flew. It was cloudless, and the sun hanging high, showed that the hour was somewhere around mid-morning. A gentle breeze brushed clear water’s surface and two tired figures made their way down the winding path, following the flowing water. Their heavy pads pushed the sand into traceable prints that could be traced back to when they had first come across the river a month or so ago. The traveling two were both she-wolves. They were larger than your average grey wolf – by roughly six inches.
Leif was the lighter colored of the two, not pure white, but about halfway there. She had a thick pelt of cream with a shawl of grey, and brown on her muzzle and bushy ears. There was a spot of black on her tail – the darkest area of her body which was in juxtapose of her sibling. She walked beside her sibling, it was hard to be away from the twin she’d known for all her life, even if it was such a short amount of time in comparison with the rest of the world, but they had been together when they both needed a shoulder. They had mourned together, hunted together, grown together. They could think similarly – and as some twins could they seemed to have a sort of connection that was much deeper than simply being siblings; much deeper than being friends.
But at last they were here, in a world of new starts, away from their old home, away from the Ursa pack – the pack of monsters. But Amira didn’t think of her family as monstrosities, that was just Leif’s disdain. She didn’t think she could ever forgive her parents for what they’d done to poor Elias, to her brother, to their son. She had already vowed to never go back, not even to visit.
Her mahogany eyes shifted from her path to the white and black wolf beside her. “Let’s rest.,, She offered, her alto voice sounding heavy and exhausted from their endeavors. Once she had made the offer she padded up the bank and out of the hot glare of Fenris, padding to the shade of the trees that led to the forest. She then lowered her hind to the bedding of grass, dirt, and fallen needles of pine. Her front followed suit and soon she was lying on the ground. She rolled her rump so that her hind legs were splayed beside her as opposed to under her, and she crossed her large front paws. It seemed to have been ages since she had lain down, but really it had only been since early the night before. They had taken to traveling some days and some nights, it made good time, and it gave adequate rest to the siblings. But still, it would’ve been nice to remain at home, where there was safety in numbers, where a bear attack wasn’t as possible, where starvation was more difficult than it was as a Kerl. But Leif supposed that, since there were two of them, they’d created their own makeshift pack, and they were the only two allowed to be in.

Side by side the pair would travel, a pack of two with no true leader. Both were large she-wolves, with pelts that contrasted in color but matched nevertheless; there was a dark strip between the eyes and dark ears, a patch of color at the base of the tail that was dark for Leif and light for Amira. There was no doubt the two were sisters; they were fraternal twins, being from the same litter. In some ways the darker Varg, Amira, was the leader; however, in some ways her sister was, too. Amira was the aggressive, action-oriented half, while Leif was the docile, thought-inclined sister. Amira knew how to protect herself and her sibling with force and instinct, while the other Varg knew how to defend them with wit and wisdom. One would be lost attempting to find two wolves as close as these; even mates could rarely match the bond of twins.
Their pack of origin had been all Amira knew, all she thought of and hoped for, until that day only two months before that her own parents had betrayed them. No harm had come to Amira or Leif, not physical, at least, but they had watched their own older brother killed by those rage-filled parents. Amira was torn apart by this, having trusted and believed in Ursa pack only to have its image destroyed for her forever. The single consoling thing in her life was her sister, the only one she had left to care for and be cared for by.
Together they had followed this river to see just where they would end up; they had no destination in mind, only to travel until they were ready to stop. Amira sensed they both were tired enough for a rest, and sure enough Leif said that it was time to. They moved to the shade of the mass of trees near the water, Amira following behind her sister before they split to leave a few yards between them; it was too warm to be close by, near to each other’s body heat. Leif lay upon the cushioning grass and Amira followed suit. She sat on her own section of lush grass, laying her belly on the ground without sprawling out. Her paws sat parallel in front of her and her tail curled slightly to the side of her body.
Amira let out a sigh, one of relief from the tiring, constant walking. It had been their choice to do so but that did not make their journey any less exhausting. In her own fatigued, low range voice Amira spoke. “I feel like I could fall asleep now with the sun so warming and the birdsongs overhead; with this wonderful shade and the cool river keeping me comfortable.” As if to show she meant it, the Varg’s head dropped onto her paws slowly, and her eyelids half-closed. “I wonder how long we’ll travel before finding whatever it is we’re looking for. What are we searching for, after all?” Amira’s tone was sleepy and worn, her words that of the mixed realms of reality and dreaming.

a prologue;
“Yes, it is quite lovely in the springtime isn’t it? And almost summer too, you’ll have a hard time with so much black on your pelt – we’ll have to stay near the water.,, She gave her sibling a kindly smile, though she missed their triplet Theo greatly. Sure, Amira and Theo had a rivalry between them, but it was healthy for siblings to challenge each other and learn how to fight for rank and assert themselves. Not that Leif very much cared to assert herself, she wasn’t the kind to go about fighting every wolf she saw to get ranking above them. That seemed silly. There was no purpose to constantly fighting, it just wounded others and made living difficult – who wanted to be half blind or have a broken leg? It was far too dangerous to try to make it in the world with such handicaps, though handicaps often came with time and were quite hard for many to avoid. Leif figured that she would do a fair job at it though – avoiding confrontation. Particularly as a Kerl, as Kerls need only worry about their own territory, neither worrying about Drappa or Dragga, no Sikla to contend with, nor Beta to argue.
She was saddened to see Amira so weary. It seemed unfair to keep her on her toes so much, to keep her moving. Leif spoke gently to her slightly older sibling, in tones that reverberating her kind heart and her love for her family. “We’re looking for a home to which we may call our own, no longer can we stay with daddy and mum, we’re old enough now to live on our own, and I feel that we should take independence from Ursa and find our own packs with which we fit in.,, Her large body made an impression in the green as she lay, her thick plume of white swaying behind her, and bushy brown ears pricked up to hear all the glories of the land beyond the forest, the world beyond the one that they had been borne to, and had so escaped. She did not stand, nor leave the comfortable position; instead she regarded the world around her with mahogany eyes. The verdant trees that sang in the wind, their sturdy branches clicking in time, the sweet melody of the river and the distant call of birdsongs that echoed in the mid-morning sunlight which glistened in dappled radiance on the ground around their bodies, spotting them with healthy yellow-white light. A mysterious yet beautiful world was awaiting the two girls her, Leif had to briefly wonder if they would settle in the same pack, or if she herself would remain as a Kerl and live her life alone while Amira found a family and filled her ambitions with the boundless power that a Drappa of her caliber might possess.
A strange look about her face, a new expression – or at least one she had not worn in a long while – as curiosity lit her eyes. “What do you suppose this new territory has to offer us?,, She wondered to her other, the co-Drappa of her life, the fellow ruler of their little made-up pack of misfits. There were no times that she missed her former home, only days and hours that she missed the Varg that she left behind. Gentle Emil, desecrated Elias, the lovers Ainsley and Kern, pitiful Luca, aunty Vera and uncle Brick – but never did she miss her mother and father, not once did she think of dearest daddy Arvin in loving consideration, nor the mother who gave her life as wretched Raisa had partnered herself with such a monster, and as if possessed by Wolfbane himself the two had ruined the eldest brother of their love. To Leif this world was an escape from them and their miserable accommodations and vile teachings, though she wondered what such a place as this would be to her sister.

Amira tilted her head so that she was looking at her sibling, no longer lost in the realm of sleep. She was a strong Varg, and after even a short rest she was able to regain much of her strength. Still, Amira hoped they could stay here for a while; she was still tired.
Ah, yes, the summer months were always more difficult for Amira. Her dark fur attracted the heat in a way that left her panting while her lighter counterpart was perfectly fine. “As long as we stay in the forest the shade should protect us and I can blend in the shadows.” She didn’t want Leif to worry about her too much; Amira didn’t be the one to bring them down. If they needed to leave the riverside so be it, she would not complain.
This lifestyle was treacherous, yet somehow more peaceful than living in the safety of a pack had been. Leif’s calm personality kept them from fighting, though Amira could feel stress building in her belly from time to time with no way to let it out. These were the times when she snapped at her sibling, when otherwise they got along perfectly. This was one of the many things she missed about Ursa, particularly Theo who had always been there to spar with. Competition could be a good thing, and with Leif there was virtually none.
When Leif answered her question, Amira could hear the kindness she possessed in even her tone. This was why she had left Ursa. Yes, how could she ever be without her loving sister? They were searching for a home, their own pack, and their independence. Amira knew all these things yet took comfort in hearing them spoken aloud. They were doing nothing wrong, these two Varg, no matter if Amira felt guilty on occasion. Inevitably they would end up somewhere better, right? Amira would make sure that they would, and that they would be together despite everything. If Leif was their kindness, their brains, then Amira would be their strength, their instinct. Amira would be the Drappa of their pack, and even though Leif had no need for power she would be a Beta. That was the future as Amira saw it. Perfection.
It was Leif’s turn to ask a question – what did this territory have to offer them? Now this was something for Amira to ponder. She lifted her head from her paws. For a moment she did naught but listen to the world around them. With her eyes closed and ears and spirit open, she listened. The birds did not cease their singing, filling the world with their beautiful songs. The river was soothing in its music, the trickling of water and, distantly, the roaring over rocks and obstacles. Smaller animals, which were far away from the wolves to avoid their teeth and claw, made their tiny noises of life, and even the forest around them whispered in the wind. This land had glory and beauty, but this was not what it had for them. “Freedom and opportunity,” she at last replied. “We can become whoever, whatever we want. There is food and drink, risk and hope, and most of all there is room for us to exist.” She was smiling in the way of the wolf, finally with her eyes open and glancing at her sister confidently. “It has for us whatever we want it to, for we are strong Varg.” A pause, then another question. “What do you see in this land, sister?” Now she chuckled, this absolute seriousness was too much for her.
“I do wish we could meet some others, though. It may become lonely with only the two of us.” She was kidding, in a way. Amira wouldn’t be lonely, though she would love to find some new friends. Even an enemy would be better than no one, being Kerl was only so exciting.

a prologue; “Well, a Kerl’s life is a lonely one, most Kerl don’t even travel with a sibling – let alone anyone else.,, Leif spoke softly, her voice easily carrying over the nurturing sounds around them, feeding to her the strength of peace and prosperity. “I feel a great and powerful force here, something foreboding and welcoming at the same time. It’s like Tor herself is watching over us two, and she is guiding us here… I feel much potential.,,
And it was true, for any Varg of these lands would know that in the summer life was easy. Prey was widely available, there was much land to be claimed and shared among many bodies, there were friends to be made and yes, even enemies. But what Leif saw was the chance at a life she had not been able to ever have before. The chance to stray away from the life of a forced warrior, the life of an unwilling fighter – to spread her spirit’s wings and fly free at last. And wouldn’t it be wonderful to fly? She reveled in this feeling. Complete sovereignty. Like the prologue to a new life.
“I do agree though,, she mentioned as an afterthought. She wouldn’t say it outright for she loved Amira dearly, but someone new would be a great and wonderful treat. Even as pups there was always that passing Kerl, the new additions to the pack. Briefly her mind drifted, what did daddy think of them leaving? Would he try to find them? How could she cover their tracks so the murderous brute would have the hardest time finding them? Though she knew he would only come after Amira, if he indeed came at all and hadn’t been killed or overthrown. She wondered how she could protect Amira from monsters like that; her sister had been shut away in the violence for so long – though Leif knew her sister loved to fight, to spar, but there was so much more to life than to just be daddy’s little girl. She admired her sibling’s strength though. To be able to put up with so much for so long, Leif didn’t have that kind of patience. She couldn’t exist in Ursa; she had been planning to leave long before the incident, long before their eldest brother was killed. Dear Elias, sweet Elias. He would’ve been the one to take over the pack when her father stepped down, would’ve been the one to change it. She knew he had his own ideals, they didn’t totally involve fighting – sure he wanted to keep tradition, but he wouldn’t have been the one to start a war. She missed him with all her heart and soul, she missed Ainsley and Kern too. The secret mates, had they been found yet, or were they free too?
Leif lowered her dome to her paws, resting her white muzzle upon white mitts and watching her sister, observing, it was something she did best. “Let’s stay here a while.,, she suggested casually.

“Here?” Amira asked, surprised. “How long of a while?” Even though they had traveled so far so quickly, Amira still felt a sense of urgency, a need to get away from any potential danger. It was part of her instinct as a wolf. Yet Leif wanted to stay. Truly it was a peaceful, healing place, here by the river, but... “Is it really safe?” she asked softly. “What if we’re being followed?” Amira was usually the one to be impulsive and make such a decision, so it surprised her that her sister would do so.
She sighed, catching her sister’s gaze. “I guess your right. We can’t live in fear forever. If they were chasing us...there would have been some sign.” Amira suddenly felt empty. Maybe no one cared that they had left. Maybe they weren’t as important as she’d thought. The she-wolf felt her ears flatten sadly.
Amira suddenly wanted to howl with all her strength, to see if she would get a response. She didn’t want to seem crazy, so she merely whined.
A new feeling crept into her, this one far more demanding. Hunger. When was the last time they’d hunted? “I’m hungry,” she mumbled. She didn’t expect a response.

It will be as though we vanish here.,, but another idea peaked her interest. “But first you will go, and I with your scent and mine shall lead them deep into the forest and away before I come to meet you again washed of any lingering Ursa blood.,, The she wolf pushed herself up from the earth, her claws gripping the ground and the grass pushing between her toes as her body was captured in the flattened strands of green once below her. Now she paced beside the river, dipping her pads in the cold water as she walked. She promised this to herself, they would escape and she would keep her sister from the terrible possessive jowls of her father. She growled to herself, and bit at the water, her tongue dipping into the cool liquid and drinking the life source down.
“We will have many adventures, you and I Amira. They started together, but we must part ways for now. I shall meet you at the end of this river, we will meet once Tor has come full circle and her eye has opened wide upon us once more.,, A full month is all they would need to wait. She padded to her sister and rested her chin upon the dark fae’s back, nuzzling her muzzle into the gentle hackles. “Be safe dear sister, find others to hide your scent along the way, I know they are here, you need only chance upon one.,, She gave a gentle lick to the hind ear of her beloved Amira. Only a month, just one cycle of the moon, then they would meet again. “Promise me you will not render yourself into any trouble while we are apart.,, Leif said, joking to her sibling slightly, for even though she was the younger of the two – and indeed the youngest of three – she had the soul of a one perhaps much older than her years. “Be aware of rapids stray not too far into the wild waters and do not lose your soul to it.,,

Amira was comforted by Leif’s words and for a moment her tail swished back and forth across the grass. But then her sister spoke of parting ways, of separating and leaving a false trail. Amira leapt to her feet, shocked. “No, sister,” she whined, eyes wide and ears back in fright. “I don’t want to be without you.” Despite her protests, Amira knew Leif was right. It would be safer for both of them if they split, especially if father was following only Amira’s scent.
Seeing Leif walk to the river reminded Amira of her own thirst, and she also lowered her tongue into the cool liquid. She lapped up enough water to satiate her thirst, parting from the water with a saddened look. Their gazes met, and the she-wolf sighed. “But I know you are right, Leif.” Next to the river the two shared the wolves’ form of a hug, nuzzling and licking each other. She listened to the wisdom of her younger sister, a feeling of loneliness already spreading through her being. Wolves were not meant to be alone, and Amira couldn’t remember a time in her life she’d been without Leif.
“I promise, and you must promise to be safe as well,” she replied. Then she repeated her sister, “One moon until we meet again.” Amira stepped back, lifting her muzzle to the sky and howling briefly but mournfully. She thought of all she had lost in so short a time and what she would encounter in the time to come. Now was not the moment to fear someone hearing. When the howl ended she spoke. “I’ll miss you so much. Goodbye, sister.”
She stepped into the shallows of the water, turning away from her only friend and family – all she had. Amira was a proud Varg, and so she raised her head and lifted her tail from her legs. Both sisters were strong. They would both survive, Amira knew. She walked forward, enjoying the coolness on her tired paws and the wind in her fur.

“I too promise, I will not let anyone catch me.,, She watched as her sister padded into the river, and she joined the howl, a small pact between the two that they would be united again. It was hard to remember a time when she was away from Amira, but it would do the sisters some good to meet new Varg. Once her sister had waded far enough away, Leif went to work. She padded to the spot where Amira had been laying and promptly began rolling in the grass, trying to collect as much of her scent as possible, she stood straight and shook the grass free from her pelt. She raised her muzzle again and called to her sister one last time, and then she was off.
She took off at a sprint, splitting away from the river at full speed. Determination was in her eye, the will to keep her sister safe, the will to be safe from her father, the will to be free. For what seemed like the first time in a long time, Leif smiled, a grin splitting her maw and her tongue lolling as she created a trail that lead through the forests and into the meadow, she prayed the summer day would chance some rain to cover their tracks even more, to help her become invisible.
