what music do people prefer nowadays, and how far have generations gone from classical to new age? How do you think this new age of music will affect later generations. Shall we inspire peace like woodstock or go the opposite direction with music and cause anarchy? i mean thats a good idea with how the government is nowadays, but not what the people need. How is music affecting us? and what are the genres of music that motivate us the most?

It sort of varies. I listen to Jethro Tull, Rush, OceanLab, Red Hot Chili Peppers, ABBA. I also listen to The Phantom of the Opera, Avenue Q, Rocky Horror Picture Show, etc. I can't really stand modern music, meh.
None of the stuff I listen to is on the radio, meh. I really wanna see Phantom, but I live in Shetland, and I'd have to go to London to see it, but I don't have much money, being only 13.
I think modern crap (pardon my language) is being played too much!

Yeah, High School Musical is just stupid. No offense to anybody who actually likes it. *shudders*.
Phantom of the Opera is the best! It's a true musical, unlike stupid High School Musical. *shudders again*.
I just don't have taste in modern pop music, though I will admit there is the occasional song that's got a good beat. But only occasionally. *winks*

Lol, neither of you would ever want to be riding in my car.
I listen to a lot of Country, Alternative, Rock, even a bit of Pop. And a lot of it is considered 'mainstream'. That label is actually getting kind of silly these days since it seems that if more then one person knows about a group or artist they are automatically selling out, but whatever. I am much more concerned with how it sounds to me rather then whether or not it's still cool
I don't think any one genre is overplayed on the radio since there are stations for everything. The only time you're really getting a mix on a single station is if you listen to the Top 40, Oldies, etc. Even then, it's hard for me to say something is actually overplayed since it's based mainly on demand. People like hearing Lady Gaga (for example) so that's what gets played. Then agian, I'm also one of those people that doesn't really 'tire' of my favorite music. If I'm really into a particular song, hearing it a lot only makes it better. Heck I overplay a ton of stuff on my own via iPod lol.
Annnnd, I think that's it. I don't actively hate any particular genre or group...I mainly just don't listen to stuff that doesn't appeal to me.

very true dakota, i am an avid music apreciator though where i am at in everyday situations i am forced to contend with artists that love to cuss. now cussing isnt bad. an occasional f bomb here and there relieves stress for everyone, its only bad when its degeneritive and vulgar, as is such the music the people here listen to. but yes, though my tastes dont generally go towards country, i will still listen if a friend says that the song is good.

They have radio stations that play just 'modern' music, but they also have stations dedicated to oldies. Just because you don't like a certain station doesn't mean that radio as a whole is bad. It exposes you to songs that you may like, but have forgotten about. My car stereo has been broken for months, and the only thing available to me is the radio. I could complain about it, and only drive in silence, but I decided instead to program stations that play music I'm fond of, songs that don't "suck" or make me "shudder" (I think it goes without saying that if you don't like something...just don't listen to it).
In short, there is no " best" or "most popular" genre. Like Dak said, the radios play songs based on demand, songs become hits based on demand. Of course a modern hip hop channel isn't going to start playing Phantom of the Opera- the general audience that tunes into that channel doesn't demand that sort of thing, but different audiences do. There's no sense in slamming other genres just because you don't like them, when it's clear that other people must like them, or they wouldn't get played ;)
And Snowflame, you must be listening to all the wrong stations, because I've heard a majority of the artists you listed on the radio. ;)

hmm, i'll have modify the original post. i hadnt meant to slam genres save for highschool musical, i meant only what preference of music do people prefer. The school i go to, people prefer rap, with a little r&b and powwow music. sometimes the rap is good *colt 45* sometimes its not. i think they dont play enough oldies on the radio, like nelly, or snoop, even Heavy D. The good stuff. sometimes the new techno rap hurts my ears. i mean its a good beat, but the pitch is really high.

I agree with Kai. There is no "most popular" genre of music. The world has many varieties of music. I myself listen to many genres.
I like Jazz and how the sweet sounds of a saxophone mixed with piano with a trumpet and a blue-sie sounding guitar. Some days i like to listen to rap and love the flow of lyrics mixed with the electronic bass lines, like Mos def or Flobots (although i dont think that qualifies as rap lol) or possibly pharaoh moch or the alchemist. there are some days where i listen to classical piano or Spanish classic guitar or the many orchestrated music that the classical music station has to offer =P . Then there are days when I love to listen to deafening death metal or metal core, bands like Martyr AD, or despised Icon, or The Human Abstract , I could go on and on (cuz most of the CD's i own are metal lol.)
My point being that there many perspectives of the various genres of music and that they cant be compared like two cars or two pens of a different color. Each one has a different effect on each person and so there can never be a most popular genre.
Or at least thats what i think
