I before E except after C: Works for the majority of words, such as: # achieve, believe, bier, brief, hygiene, grief, thief, friend, grieve, chief, fiend, patience, pierce, priest # ceiling, conceive, deceive, perceive, receipt, receive, deceit, conceit
But then things get complicated: it doesn't work with words pronounced "ay" as in neighbour, freight, beige, sleigh, weight, vein, and weigh and there are many exceptions to the rule: either, neither, feint, foreign, forfeit, height, leisure, weird, seize, and seizure.
Still, the rule is relatively simple and worth remembering.
beautiful - in primary school I was taught a little song to remember this. Mrs B, Mrs E Mrs A U T Mrs I, Mrs F U L. It helps when you know the little tune it has, but I added this in anyway.
assassin - an assassin has 'two asses' to fit 'in' the door. This was the PG13 version I made up to help someone. It followed the dirty version, which no doubt they remember. Basically, assasssin is, 'ass' 'ass' and 'in'

Pardon me if I'm intruding on your thread, dear Fenris... I wanted to suggest the good ole Bruce Almighty way to remember BEAUTIFUL. If you've seen the movie, he says, a few times at least, "Bee-ee-ay-you-tiful." I know it helped most of my friends pass English class.
