Nageam tensed for a moment, but she let it all out in a long, slow breath. “Okay, I’m going to do this.” She was determined, she wanted to make Dakota proud and she wanted to prove to herself that she could hunt like any adult wolf could. She kept low to the ground, careful of her footsteps, she didn’t want to make any sudden noises without first being able to accomplish her goal. She moved forward carefully, watching the deer. She saw no fauns yet, she hadn’t smelled any either, she spotted several pregnant hinds though. Each was grazing peacefully, but they would be too difficult, they would run and kick too hastily if startled.
She continued to survey as she came about one fourth of the way around the herd, she spotted three old bucks, and two old hinds, but they all looked healthy. She was beginning to become disheartened. She moved on passed them and searched for the leader of the herd, she would need to watch out for him because he would be ruthless and protect the herd from anything that got in the way. She spotted him. A proud and beautiful deer, his antlers alone were amazing. But what was this? His hind leg was injured, crippled by the looks. His harem wouldn’t be his for long. Nageam grinned. She spied that some of his antlers were chipped and they were still encased in velvet. This was perfect, for when a deer’s antlers were in velvet they were less likely to use them.
She moved closer, careful to keep the wind towards her, any shift and they would have no lunch. She kept low, very low, her breath was coming in very short bursts. This was it, she was three feet from the injured male, and she caught site of a hind and her young fawn behind him. The fawn was newly born. It was too perfect, too good to be true. It was also time to make herself known to them. She raised her hackles and straightened her tail with her spine. Auds pressed tightly to her head and her lips curled back to reveal small fangs. She growled, ordering the deer to run. The hind was startled by Nageam sudden appearance and darted off, the others followed, however the leader stayed still as the rest of his heard moved passed. Nageam barked at him to get him to move, but he seemed to know that she was young. She sensed trouble, he reared, she backed away and tried to herd him while keeping the rest in their movement toward Dakota.
